Over that last week I have had so many conversations that remind me of the huge task of helping Christians see that what God says is true and what media or people say is not necessarily true. It is amazing how our surroundings can be louder than the very words of God. I have heard so many say "but everybody does that or this." If everyone is doing it or saying it then it has to be ok or not that big of a deal. Especially when it comes to I know the Bible says this but no one does that so the Bible must be outdated, or God is outdated. Though most people I talk to don't believe that! I don't hardly talk to anyone who says God or the Bible is outdated. But I do talk to people who say I know that is what it says but here is "Reality." That can't be done or that can't be applied because its not happening. They have been told something enough or seen somehting enough to believe it whether it agrees with God or not.
An example of what I mean. For instance if a young athlete goes to practice with a great level of excitement and enthusiasm about the game they are about to play but only to have a coach look at them and say you are terrible at this game. The first time around no doubt would hurt tremendously, but mom and dad or a sibling would say hey just go out there and work as hard as you can and just get better. The young boy or girl probably would be able to return with some level of enthusiasm to try it again. Yet only to hear the coach say again that you are terrible at this game. 6 months down the road where do you think that young boy or girl will be. They will most likely be in a state of believing those words, "You are terrible." They will begin to believe that hey this just isn't the game for me. I would bet that even the other boys or girls on that team would even begin to believe what that coach has said day after after day. Can you imagine the reaction of the team if there was some scenario where there was no one else who could come in and play for the team but that player. The team would probably shake their heads or roll their eyes with the thought of, "OH no don't let them play." Can you imagine the thoughts in that kids head. "I shouldn't be out here. I am just going to mess it up. God let the weather get bad enough that I don't have to play. Maybe I can convince them that I am sick and can't play"
The chances of ever convincing that young boy or girl that they can be great at that sport is fairly slim. As a matter of fact it would even be tough to convince the team of that. I see this battle in trying to get people, mostly teens and their parents to believe what God says about them instead of what the world around them says. Not only are hearing it from a "coach" but then when they get chance to step up the other team memebers shake their heads and think what are you trying to do; save the world. Teens for 100's years have been told that they are rebellious, wild, irresponsible, and selfish. Or another way they have heard it is is they are all about SEX DRUGS AND ROCK n Roll. Well maybe hip hop more so these days. Either way we wake up everyday hearing about the numbers of students that are involved in sexual activity, underage drinking, and etc. Oh and that these numbers are the same for thsoe involved in the church as those not.
Maybe the reason these stats are true is because they are listening to those who say that is who they are everyday instead of listgening to who they are as born again believers in Jesus Christ everyday. I recently heard about a Junior in HS say to a undercalssmen, "Everybody cusses and you will to. Just give it time." Really? I feel like I have known some that didn't! You hear on television 3 out of 4 teens are invovled in sexual activity. Really? I meet with almost 300 weekly that I believe the numbers are not even close to that. I REALLY DO BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE NOT! You hear the overwhelming numbers about how teens and parents don't get along at all and are constantly fighting. Really? I know so many that really do get along. They disagree and fight sure but they love each other and get along!
Here is what I believe about teens who know Jesus Christ and I am praying that God can be heard over all the other messages. I believe that they are NEW CREATIONS IN CHRIST! I believe that THEIR SINS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN ONCE AND FOR ALL! I believe that GOD HAS CALLED THEM TO BE A SALT AND LIGHT, AMABASSADORS OF CHRIST, ALIENS IN THIS WORLD, AND HAS NOT GIVEN THEM MORE THAN THEY CAN HANDLE! I believe that THEY CAN MAKE CHOICES THAT HONOR JESUS CHRIST! I believe IN THIS GENERATION THAT THEY CAN SEEK THE FACE GOD AND THE NEXT ONE AFTER THEM! I believe that I SEE MORE JESUS IN THEM THAN I SEE IN MYSELF! I believe that I NEED TO START TELLING THEM WHO THEY ARE IN CHRIST AS MUCH AS I CAN! I believe that I NEED TO PRAY THAT THEY WILL HEAR JESUS MUCH MORE THAN ANYTHING FROM THIS WORLD!
I don't believe that this note can solve any of these problems. I believe only the work of Jesus can. But i do believe that maybe if I encourage someone today that maybe they can believe what Christ has said about them. Heck I believe that i need to tell myself this today. I believe that I need to be reminded of who I am now that I dwell in Christ. I may be so wrong or over simplifying the matter, but I know for me I have realized this to be true in my life and the conversations I have had with students this week I see it there also. SO I am not here to solve all teen issues again only Christ can! I just hope to remind a few today that they can live like Christ has created them to live.
Teenagers I love you guys and I believe in you because I know you belong to Jesus Christ. I believe that YOU GUYS CAN HEAR WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST IF YOU WILL TAKE TIME TO LISTEN TO IT EVERYDAY! Today remind yourself who Christ is and remember that you have been placed in Christ. You have the choice to believe Him with your life today. Just start with today! I believe in you because Christ has said these things about you and He speaks no lies. Listen to The One who created you! Be the generations who follows Him despite the fact that you are the "only one" who does
